Not every job needs a full van. If you've just got one big item, like an old sofa or a broken fridge, a local licensed company can collect it on its own. Many will carry it out of the house for you, so you don't have to drag it to the kerb.

Items we can help with

  • Sofas and armchairs, including corner sofas and recliners
  • Mattresses and beds, including divan bases and bed frames
  • Fridges and freezers, including American-style fridge freezers
  • Washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and cookers
  • Wardrobes, tables, chests of drawers and other furniture
  • TVs, carpets, exercise machines and other large items

How much does single item removal cost?

As a rough guide:

ItemTypical price on its own
Sofa or armchair£35 to £80
Fridge, freezer, washing machine or TV£20 to £50
Council bulky collectionOften a flat £20 to £50, but you may wait

Some companies have a minimum charge, so one item can cost about the same as two or three. If you've got anything else to go, add it to the same collection. For a bigger pile, see rubbish removal. For several pieces of furniture, see furniture & appliance removal.

What changes the price

  • The item. Fridges and sofas cost more to dispose of properly
  • Access. Upstairs flats, tight stairs and long carries take longer
  • Taking it apart. Big wardrobes or beds may need dismantling
  • How quickly you need it. Same-day or next-day can cost more
  • Your area. London and the South East are usually higher

Sofas and fridges need special disposal

Upholstered furniture like sofas and armchairs often contains chemicals called POPs, so in England it has to be incinerated instead of going to landfill. Fridges and freezers contain gases that must be removed at a specialist site. That's why these items can cost a bit more, and why it matters that whoever takes them is a registered waste carrier. If an unlicensed collector fly-tips your item, you can be fined.

Questions

Single item removal FAQs

How much does it cost to remove a single item?

As a rough guide, a sofa is around £35 to £80 to have collected on its own, and electricals like fridges, TVs and washing machines are around £20 to £50 each. Some companies have a minimum charge, so adding a second item often costs only a little more.

Is the council bulky waste collection cheaper?

Sometimes. Councils usually charge a flat fee, often around £20 to £50, but you may wait a week or more for a slot and you have to put the item outside yourself. A private company can often collect sooner and carry it out of the house for you.

Will they carry it out of my house?

Yes, most private companies will collect from inside, including upstairs. Tell them about stairs or tight access when you ask for a quote so the price is right.

Can a sofa go to landfill?

Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered furniture often contain chemicals called POPs, so in England they must be incinerated rather than sent to landfill or recycled in the normal way. A licensed company will dispose of it correctly.

Can you take a fridge or freezer?

Yes. Fridges and freezers need special recycling because of the gases inside them, which is why they can cost a little more than other items.

Is it worth adding more items?

Usually, yes. The van is coming anyway, so a second or third item often adds much less than the first. If you have a few bags or another piece of furniture, mention it.
