Leicester bulky waste collection: free collections explained
Leicester City Council collects large household items for free once every two months. That's much cheaper than the councils around it, but it has strict rules. Here's how it works, what it won't take, and what to do if it doesn't fit your job. Checked against the council's website on 27 October 2026.
- Free once every two months, for up to 5 items
- £22 for any extra collection (up to 5 items)
- Items must be outside by 7am. The crew won't come inside or take anything apart
- No building waste, garden waste, glass, mirrors, sheds, tyres or pianos
- Leicester city householders only. Landlords and businesses can't use it

How it works
- Book online through the council's My Account
- Every household gets one free collection every two months, for up to five items
- Need another before your two months are up? You can book an extra one for £22 (up to five items)
- Once booked, a collection can't be cancelled, changed or refunded
- If your items aren't out on time, the collection still counts as used
What it takes
- Furniture, such as sofas, tables, chairs and wardrobes
- Mattresses and bed frames
- Large appliances, such as fridges and washing machines
- Carpets and underlay
- Extra bags of household rubbish, securely tied
What it won't take
- Building and DIY waste: rubble, bricks, plasterboard, fitted kitchens and bathroom suites
- Garden waste, sheds and greenhouses
- Items with glass or mirrors
- Tyres and car parts
- Pianos, garage doors and ladders over 6 feet
- More than one radiator, or more than two internal doors
- Hazardous waste
For rubble and DIY waste, see getting rid of rubble and soil in Leicester. For garden waste, see garden waste in Leicester.
The rules
- Put items out by 7am at the front of your property, somewhere safe and easy to reach
- Cover mattresses and sofas so they stay dry
- The crew won't go into your home, shed, garage or outbuildings
- They won't dismantle anything. Take beds and wardrobes apart first
- Elderly or disabled residents who can't move items outside and have no help may get an assisted collection. Call 0116 454 1002
Outside the city
If you live outside the city boundary, your district council runs the service, and none of them are free:
| Council | Price |
|---|---|
| Leicester City | Free every two months (up to 5 items), then £22 for up to 5 |
| Blaby | £32.50 for the first item online, then £22 each (up to 6) |
| Charnwood (Loughborough) | £30 for up to 3 items, or £40 for up to 3 upholstered items |
| Hinckley and Bosworth | £42 for up to 3 items, or £42 for up to 2 upholstered items |
| Oadby and Wigston | £45 for up to 3 items, then £5 each |
When to use a private company instead
- The item is upstairs or too heavy to get outside
- It needs taking apart
- You need it gone sooner than the next slot
- You've already used your free collection and have more than five items
- It's something the council won't take, like rubble, garden waste or glass
- You're a landlord clearing a rental property
A private firm can carry everything out and take it the same week. See single item removal or rubbish removal.
