Building and DIY jobs create a lot of waste fast, and it is rarely the sort of thing you want sitting on the drive. A licensed waste company can collect and dispose of it properly.
Typical jobs
- Kitchen and bathroom strip-outs
- Knocked-through walls, extensions and loft conversions
- Patio, path and shed removal
- DIY leftovers: old units, flooring, tiles, timber and rubble
Mixed or sorted waste
Plasterboard, rubble, soil and wood are often separated and priced differently, so sorted waste can be simpler to take away than a mixed pile. If you can, keep different materials apart and tell the company what you have.
A note on asbestos
If you think a material might contain asbestos (for example, some old roofing, textured coatings or insulation boards), do not break it up or move it. Get advice from a specialist asbestos company first. A normal waste collection company will not usually take it.
Who is responsible for the waste?
If a builder is doing the work, ask them who will take the waste away and for their waste carrier registration number. Anyone who passes on waste has a legal duty to make sure it goes to an authorised person. If it is dumped illegally, the trail can lead back to the person who produced it.
What changes the price
- The amount, and how heavy it is. Rubble and soil weigh a lot
- The types of material, and whether they are sorted
- Access: how far the waste is from where the van can park
- Whether it is already bagged, or needs loading by hand
