Council collection
Stoke-on-Trent City Council charges £44.35 for each electrical item on its council bulky collection. That covers fridges, freezers, cookers, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, dehumidifiers, and TVs of 40 inches or more. Items go out at the kerb by 7am, you pay when you book, and the charge is non-refundable. Two appliances would be £88.70.
The tip
Both Hanford and Burslem take electrical items, large appliances, fridges, freezers and TVs. Bring proof of your Stoke-on-Trent address, remember both are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and make sure you can unload it. The council says ID may be asked for with items like fridge freezers. From 2 November, a van or trailer needs a free permit and booking.
When you buy new
Many retailers will take your old appliance away when they deliver a new one, sometimes for a fee. Ask before you order.
Private collection
A licensed company will carry it out from your kitchen and take it to a proper recycling site, often within a day or two. A single appliance is often £20 to £50, which can be less than the council's £44.35. See single item removal.
