Council collection
A sofa can go on the council bulky collection: £50.70 for up to five items, then £10.18 for each extra one. The council won't take anything bigger than 6ft by 4ft, so a large corner sofa may need splitting. It has to be at the kerb by 7am (or from 7pm the night before), and the charge is non-refundable.
The tip
Both Hanford and Burslem take furniture. You'll need a vehicle big enough, proof of your address, and from 2 November a permit and booking if you use a van or trailer.
Charity
A sofa in good condition with its fire safety label still attached may be taken by a furniture charity. Without the label, charities generally can't resell it.
Private collection
A licensed company can carry it out of any room, often within a day or two. A single sofa is often £35 to £80. See single item removal.
Why sofas need special disposal
Many sofas contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from flame retardants, so in England they have to be incinerated, not landfilled. Use a registered waste carrier so it's dealt with properly.
