Taking it to the tip
Electrical and electronic equipment is accepted at all five Sheffield tips, and Veolia lists white goods such as fridges among the large items the sites take. A fridge freezer is heavy and has to stay upright, so you'll need a big car or a permitted van, and someone to help lift.
Council collection
Household appliances go on the council bulky collection with any other items. One fridge on its own is £40.25, the same as three items, so it's worth adding the old microwave and anything else at the same time.
When you buy new
Under the take-back rules, big electrical retailers must take your old appliance free in store when you buy a like-for-like new one, even if you bought the old one elsewhere. Bring it within 28 days with your receipt. Collecting it from your home when they deliver is a separate service that's often charged, and big items may only be taken at certain stores. Ask before you order.
Private collection
A licensed company carries it out from the kitchen and takes it to a proper recycling site, often within a day or two. One appliance is often £20 to £50, which can be less than the council's £40.25. See single item removal.
