Sheffield tip van permit: the rules and banned vans
Sheffield has strict rules on vans at its tips. Here's who can get a permit and which vans are banned, checked against Sheffield City Council and Veolia Sheffield pages on 28 October 2026.
- Vans, pick-ups and trailers need a council permit
- Yearly permit: 12 visits to one tip, only if the van is your only vehicle
- Otherwise: up to 3 one-off visits a year
- Banned at every tip: Luton, long-wheelbase and twin-axle vans
- Yearly permits take up to 10 working days

Yearly or one-off
| Permit | Who it's for | Visits |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly | Households where the van is the only vehicle, or for bringing a trailer. Van registered to your address | 12 a year, at one nominated tip |
| One-off | Exceptional cases like a house move, or households with other transport | Up to 3 a year |
Each visit uses one permit, even two visits on the same day. A yearly permit needs a copy of the V5 log book and a recent utility bill, and takes up to 10 working days. One-off permits take up to 1 working day.
Banned vehicles
These can't use any Sheffield tip, permit or not: Luton box vans, long-wheelbase vans, twin-axle vehicles, pick-ups (except 4x4s) and vans towing trailers. Hired long-wheelbase vans can't get a one-off visit either. All sites have 1.8m height barriers.
Special cases
- Business-registered or works van: no yearly permit, but you may get one-off visits
- Company car with a trailer: allowed with proof you're the allocated driver
- Mobility car with a trailer: allowed with a copy of the mobility agreement
- Car-derived van with seats permanently removed: needs a permit
- Lost permit: £10 to replace
How to apply
Contact the council's Waste Management team through its online form or on 0114 273 4567. Remember the council says renovation and construction waste should go in a skip, not to the tip, and no trade waste is allowed.
