Council collection

A sofa goes on the council bulky collection. Veolia says the item count depends on the type and size of each item, so a big corner sofa may count as more than one.

ItemsCouncil price
1 to 3£40.25
4 to 6£55.01
7 to 9£75.59
10 to 12£95.48

Collection is within 7 working days of paying. Council tenants get one free collection a year.

Taking it to the tip

Furniture is accepted at all five Sheffield tips. The catch is getting it there. A three-seater won't fit in most cars, vans need a permit, and Luton and long-wheelbase vans are banned. Check which day your nearest tip is closed.

Giving it away

Charities and reuse shops can only take upholstered furniture with the fire safety label still attached, and in good condition. Ring the charity first. If it's stained, ripped or the label's gone, it won't be taken.

Why sofas are treated differently

Sofas and armchairs can contain chemicals called POPs (persistent organic pollutants), so in England waste upholstered seating has to be incinerated, not landfilled or recycled. Licensed companies have to keep them separate, which is one reason to use a registered carrier and not a cheap "man with a van". See fly-tipping fines in Sheffield.

Private collection

A licensed company carries it out from any room, down the stairs, often within a day or two. One sofa is often £35 to £80. Add other bits at the same time and it's usually cheaper per item. See single item removal.
