Council collection
The simplest council route is the council bulky collection. A mattress counts as an item, so £40.25 covers it and up to two other things, like the bed frame and headboard. Collection is within 7 working days of paying.
The tip
The council lists mattresses among the things to dispose of properly, but Veolia's tip page doesn't say which sites take them. Ring 0114 273 4567 before you load the car. A double mattress also needs a big car or a permitted van.
When you buy new
Many mattress and bed shops offer to take your old mattress when they deliver the new one, usually for a fee. Ask when you order. It's often the easiest option.
Private collection
A licensed company carries it down the stairs and out, often within a day or two, and it's often £20 to £50 for one mattress. Don't leave it outside for someone to take. A mattress dumped in the street is fly-tipping, and the fine is £400. See single item removal.
