When it's your rubbish someone else dumps
This is the one that catches people out. You pay a "man with a van" £40 cash, and your rubbish ends up down a country lane. Sheffield City Council says it's a criminal offence not to take all reasonable measures to make sure your waste goes to someone authorised. If it can be traced back to you, you're in the frame.
How to check a collector
- Ask if they're a registered waste carrier, and for their registration number
- Check it on the Environment Agency public register, or call the Environment Agency on 03708 506 506
- Write down their name and vehicle registration
- Get a waste transfer note with their name, address, contact details and registration
A cheap quote with no paperwork is the warning sign. A proper company will happily show you their registration.
