How to get rid of a sofa in Coventry
An old sofa is one of the most common things people need to shift. Here are your options in Coventry, checked against Coventry City Council pages on 27 October 2026.
- Council bulky collection: a sofa counts as one item of the 5 you get for £21.25
- Emmaus collects good furniture for free
- It must be at the front of the house, ground floor for the council
- Upstairs or need it gone fast? A private collection, often £35 to £80
- Sofas often contain POPs and must be incinerated, not landfilled

Council collection
Coventry's bulky collection costs £21.25 for up to five items (£16.50 if you get the state pension or certain benefits), so a sofa plus an armchair and a few other things all go for one price. Book at least 2 days ahead. The sofa needs to be outside at the front, on the ground floor, where the crew can reach it without coming in. You don't need to be home.
Donate it
Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire, a homelessness charity with a shop on Red Lane, offers free collection of large items in good condition. Book online or call 024 7666 1466. Charities generally need the sofa's fire safety label still attached to be able to resell it.
The tip
The Bar Road tip has bays for non-recyclable household waste, but you'll need to book, fit the sofa in a vehicle that meets the size rules, and unload it yourself, as staff won't help. Check the council's A to Z of items before you go.
Private collection
If the sofa is upstairs, needs taking apart, or you can't get it outside, a licensed company can carry it out and take it away, often within a day or two. A single sofa is often £35 to £80. See single item removal.
Why sofas need special disposal
Many sofas and armchairs contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from flame retardants. In England, upholstered seating like this has to be incinerated rather than landfilled. That's one reason to use a registered waste carrier, not someone who might dump it.
