Sandfold LaneM19 3BJOpen, 8am to 6pm daily
Reliance StreetM40 3EZClosed for works until early 2027

Only two of the three Manchester city sites are open at the moment. The recycling centres are run for the whole of Greater Manchester, so a Manchester resident can use any of them.

Hours

The two Manchester sites are open Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm, and closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The council pages don't mention other bank holidays, so check before a holiday trip. Staff stop each vehicle at the gate to check that waste has been sorted, so separate your recycling before you arrive. Over Hulton in Bolton keeps different hours: Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm, and Sunday and bank holidays 10am to 4pm.

Who can use them

Household waste is free for residents of Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. Wigan residents, and anyone outside Greater Manchester, are told to check their own council's website. Trade and business waste isn't accepted at the household bays, and businesses have to use a weighbridge and pay. Waste from tradespeople you hired counts as trade waste.

The permit year runs from 1 April to 31 March. The sites use number plate recognition and cameras to count visits. There is no pedestrian access: if you are on foot, you can hand a small amount of waste to the staff at the entrance.

Vans and trailers

Vans under 5.3 metres, hire vans, pick-ups and cars with a twin-axle trailer all need a free van permit, applied for online at least two working days before your first visit. See the van permit guide.

Other Greater Manchester sites

Most are open 8am to 6pm daily. Hurstwood Court is one of the busiest, and the Recycle for Greater Manchester site suggests weekdays before 10am or after 4pm, and weekends before 11am or after 3pm.
