The two tips
| Tip | Address | Pick-ups | Plasterboard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chester Road | Chester Road, Stretford, M32 9AU | Listed as accepted, but see below | Not on the council list |
| Woodhouse Lane | Woodhouse Lane, off Sinderland Road, Altrincham, WA14 5TB | Not listed as accepted | Not on the council list |
Any Greater Manchester resident can use any of the sites, free for household waste. Cars get 52 visits a year, and vans, hire vans and twin axle trailers need a free van permit and get 18. Neither Trafford site is on the list of tips that take household plasterboard, so use Longley Lane or a site in a nearby borough. Food waste isn't accepted at any tip.
Chester Road
The Recycle for Greater Manchester Trafford page shows Chester Road as 8am to 8pm, while the site list shows 8am to 6pm. With the clocks back since 25 October, expect 6pm and check before a late visit. Bolton Council's page says Renew donations aren't taken at Chester Road, but the Greater Manchester pages say only Reliance Street has no donation container, so ask before you bring furniture. The council's van permit page lists this among the ten larger sites for pick-up trucks, but the site's own rules also say no pick-up trucks, so check before you go in one.
Woodhouse Lane
Woodhouse Lane is the one with a Renew shop, so it is the better stop for furniture in good condition, and it has a Podback bin for coffee pods. The council's list doesn't show pick-ups as accepted. Upholstered pieces need a fire safety tag to be donated.
Garden bin charge
Trafford charges for garden waste. The 2026-27 service costs £50 per bin, or £45 if you subscribe online, and extra bins bought at the same time are £45 each. The service year runs from 1 June to 31 May, and subscribing mid-year costs the full price. Without a subscription, a green bin with garden waste in it won't be emptied, though food waste is still collected free. Permits take up to ten working days. See garden waste in Manchester for the city's rules.
Trafford bulky collection
Trafford's page shows a minimum non-refundable charge of £44.10 for up to five items, and it doesn't say what extra items cost. It is for homes only, and business waste is covered separately. The page suggests charities for good furniture, and reminds you that a shop must take back an old electrical item when you buy a new one.
