Arkwright Street

Arkwright Street, Oldham, OL9 9LZ is the only Oldham tip. It is open 8am to 6pm daily and closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It takes household plasterboard, and the council's list shows pick-up trucks accepted there. The council's van permit page lists this among the ten larger sites for pick-up trucks, but the site's own rules also say no pick-up trucks, so check before you go in one. Any Greater Manchester resident can use any of the sites, free for household waste. Cars get 52 visits a year, and vans, hire vans and twin axle trailers need a free van permit and get 18.

Asbestos

Arkwright Street is one of the four sites that take asbestos from your own home, and the only one in Oldham. Only cement-bonded asbestos is taken. It must be wrapped twice in heavy-duty plastic, and you need a hard hat, safety glasses, hi-vis, gloves and steel-capped footwear. Times are Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 7am to 5pm, and bank holidays 7am to 6pm. The site is closed on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January. Bring a recent utility or council tax bill for the property the waste came from. A contractor's asbestos is not accepted. See asbestos disposal in Manchester.

Oldham bulky collection

Oldham announced that from 1 April 2026 bulky collections cost £10 per item with no extra charges for specific items, and some smaller electrical items cost £5. Before that it was £23 for three items, plus £12 for fridge freezers and £8 for each extra. Book online or on 0161 770 6644.

Crews won't enter your property, and there is no refund if your items aren't outside on the day. An older version of the bulky page says the service covers broken or damaged furniture and electricals that can't be reused, so confirm what qualifies when you book. It also lists free charity furniture collections, which aren't council collections. See the Manchester city bulky collection to compare.

Nearby tips

Oldham's page names Chichester Street in Rochdale and Bayley Street in Stalybridge as neighbouring centres, and any Greater Manchester site is open to you. Oldham asbestos is the main reason to use Arkwright Street over those two.
