What is taken

Recycle for Greater Manchester takes cement-bonded asbestos only, such as asbestos cement sheets, and only when it comes from your own home. It says no other type is accepted. Check the HSE website before you handle or remove it. The bulky collection also leaves out asbestos. See the council bulky collection.

The four sites

SiteOpening times for asbestos
Longley Lane, SharstonMonday to Friday 7am to 6pm, Saturday 7am to 1pm, closed Sunday. Bank holidays 7am to 5pm
Cobden Street, SalfordMonday to Friday 7am to 5pm, Saturday 7am to 1pm, closed Sunday and bank holidays
Arkwright Street, OldhamMonday to Friday 7am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 7am to 5pm. Bank holidays 7am to 6pm
Bredbury Parkway, BredburyMonday to Friday 7am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 7am to 5pm. Bank holidays 7am to 6pm

All four are closed on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January. At Longley Lane these asbestos hours differ from the tip's usual 8am to 6pm, so plan around the times in the table. The page doesn't give a price, a limit or a booking process, so ask the site before you go.

What you must wear

The council says that without the correct protective gear you can't dispose of your waste. Bring proof of address for the property the waste came from, such as a council tax bill, an annual water bill or a gas, electric or landline bill. Mobile phone bills aren't accepted.

Packing it

Wrap it twice in heavy-duty plastic. Household rubble sacks are fine, as long as the cement-bonded asbestos is double wrapped and sealed inside. Use the entrance for council and high-sided vehicles.

If a contractor removed it

The council says it doesn't accept asbestos from tradespeople at any of its facilities, because that is business waste. The contractor has to dispose of it under HSE guidance. If you are a landlord, see landlord waste in Manchester.

If it has been dumped

Asbestos fly-tipped on council or open land should be reported to the council as dumped rubbish that is an immediate and serious threat to safety. Don't touch it. See fly-tipping in Manchester.
