What the council won't take
Manchester's council bulky collection lists things it can't collect, including waste left in your home by building or repair work, laminated floorboards and kitchen worktops, window frames, external doors and conservatories, glass items such as large mirrors, and anything too big or heavy for two people to lift safely. A strip-out is almost entirely made of those. The council says it is your responsibility to dispose of these properly, and the tips only take household waste.
The tips
The tips take household waste, and rubble and soil are limited to five sacks of 900mm by 600mm per visit, from DIY work you did yourself. Longley Lane takes plasterboard from your own home, but not trade plasterboard. Waste from a tradesperson you hired is trade waste and isn't accepted. See rubble and building waste in Manchester.
Your real options
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Builders' waste collection | A loaded van of units, tiles and boards | Check the carrier registration and keep the waste transfer note |
| Skip | A bigger job over days | Needs a permit if it goes on the road |
| Grab lorry | Heavy rubble and soil | Needs space for the lorry |
Planning tips
- Ask your fitter whether disposal is included, and get it in writing
- An empty fridge can go on the council bulky collection, so deal with appliances separately. See fridge disposal
- Not sure if a board or sheet contains asbestos? Get expert advice first, because the council says it must go to a weighbridge
