The limits

Greater Manchester tips take hardcore, rubble and soil within a limit of five rubble sacks per visit, each 900mm by 600mm, and the soil must be in robust sacks. The council says only rubble from DIY work you carried out yourself is accepted. With 52 visits a year for a car, that is five sacks at a time rather than a skip-sized load. See the Manchester tips guide for visit limits.

Plasterboard

Plasterboard removed from your own home is accepted at the listed sites, and Longley Lane is on that list. Sandfold Lane isn't. Trade plasterboard isn't accepted anywhere. Tyres are accepted at the recycling centres, and garages are responsible for the tyres they replace.

Trade waste

The council says trade and business waste is not accepted at the tips, including waste from tradespeople or builders you hired. Businesses have to use a weighbridge and pay. The council's bulky collection won't take waste left by building or repair work either.

Your options

OptionBest forRough cost
Builders' waste collectionBags or piles of rubble, loaded for youOften £150 to £250 for a medium load, £250 to £400 for a large one
SkipLonger jobs you fill as you goDepends on size; a permit is needed if it goes on the road
Grab lorryTonnes of soil or rubbleAround £150 for a small load up to £450 to £500 for 16 tonnes

Asbestos

Old garage roofs and shed sheets might contain asbestos. The council says it must go to a weighbridge, with protective gear, and the council takes only cement-bonded asbestos from your own home, at four sites, one of which is Longley Lane. The pages we checked give no price or limit. Don't take it to a normal bay. See asbestos disposal in Manchester.
