Start early

Take everything you can with you, and sort what's left a week or two before the end of the tenancy, not on the last day. Bulky collections are booked for when the council is next in your area, and the page gives no fixed day, so a late request can miss your move-out date. If it is due within 24 hours you have to call.

Free council collection

The council bulky collection is free for Liverpool residents, for up to five bulky items per property. Items go outside the house, not in the alley. Before you rely on it, read this line on the council's page: "We do not collect any items left at landlord/To Let properties or business premises." The page doesn't say whether that covers a student house you rent, so ask the council first. A house containing flats needs a booking per flat.

The tips

Students with a car can use Old Swan or Otterspool. A standard car needs no booking, but a van does. There is a pedestrian gate at Old Swan and none at Otterspool. See the Liverpool tips guide.

Giving things away

The council names Emmaus Merseyside, Alder Hey Charity Shops and British Heart Foundation Tuebrook as collecting larger furniture items free of charge, and lists shops that take smaller items, including Age UK, Barnardo's and the British Heart Foundation.

What the landlord handles

Waste left in the property can become a problem for whoever is responsible for it. See landlord and rental waste in Liverpool. Leaving bags in an alley or on the street can be fly-tipping. See fly-tipping in Liverpool.

Private collection

If the house is full on the last day, a licensed company can clear everything at once. Compare single item removal for a few things and rubbish removal for a whole room. Split the cost between housemates.
