Council collection
On the council bulky collection, the terms say mattresses, where possible, should be stored upright, and you agree to cover items such as sofas and beds. Put the mattress outside your home on collection day. It can't be left in the alley or on the road. You can have up to five bulky items per property, free.
The tips
The council says its tips accept bulky items such as furniture and white goods. The accepted-items list on the Old Swan page names upholstered seating, wood and timber and large domestic appliances, but we couldn't find mattresses named on it. The Otterspool page lists no items. Ring the authority on 0151 255 1444 before a special trip. See the Liverpool tips guide.
Private collection
A licensed single item collector will usually take a mattress from the room it is in. UK guide prices are about £20 to £50, depending on the size and the stairs.
Handy tips
- Cover the mattress, and keep it dry
- If you are buying a new mattress, ask the shop whether it will take the old one away
- A mattress is awkward in a hatchback. A van or a car with the seats removed means a van booking
