The tips
Recycle for Greater Manchester says that if furniture isn't reusable you can still take it to a recycling centre for disposal. So a wardrobe, chest of drawers or bedside table that can't be reused can go there. Sofas and other cushioned items are handled separately, because of Environment Agency rules. See sofa disposal in Manchester. Longley Lane and Sandfold Lane are open 8am to 6pm every day and free for Greater Manchester residents. There is no pedestrian access, so you need a vehicle for anything this big. A full-size wardrobe won't fit in a hatchback unless it is taken apart.
Donating
Wardrobes, chests of drawers and bedside tables are named on the Renew shop donation list. Upholstered furniture needs a fire safety tag, so that rule doesn't apply to a plain wooden wardrobe.
Council collection
You choose your items from the council bulky collection's online list, so check a wardrobe or similar item is on it when you book. The council only takes items two people can lift safely, and any cupboard has to be empty. One free collection of three items is allowed a year, then £30.50 for three. Take the doors off and the unit apart if you can, and put the pieces on the pavement at the front of your home. Flat-pack that is already dismantled is easier for the crew.
Private collection
A licensed firm will take furniture from inside your home, including up the stairs, and remove it in one go. UK guide prices are about £35 to £80 for a large item, depending on size and stairs. For a whole room, see rubbish removal. For a flat or house, see house clearance in Manchester. Compare furniture and appliance removal too.
Getting it ready
- Empty it completely, including the top and the back
- Take the doors and drawers out
- Keep the screws in a bag taped to a panel
- If you are replacing it, ask the shop whether it will take the old one
