Why sofas are separate
At the recycling centres, the council says that because of new Environment Agency regulations it must collect upholstered furniture separately. That covers sofas, armchairs, office chairs and similar cushioned items. The council's pages we checked don't say which individual sites have the separate bay for disposal, so ask a member of staff when you arrive.
Donating a sofa
Furniture in good condition can be donated to the Renew shops at the recycling centres, but upholstered items need a fire safety tag. Donating isn't possible at Reliance Street, which is closed anyway. Damaged or untagged sofas go for disposal instead.
Private collection
A licensed company takes the sofa from inside your home and handles the paperwork. Prices are UK guide figures, and depend on size, stairs and how many pieces. A corner sofa costs more than a two-seater.
