Council collection
On the council bulky collection, you list the items you want taken, and you get one free collection of up to three items a year. Put the mattress on the pavement at the front of your home. The council warns that items such as mattresses become too heavy if they are left out in the rain, and it can only take items two people can lift safely, so cover it or put it out on the day.
The tips
The Greater Manchester pages say you can take used mattresses to one of its recycling centres, and that most have a mattress recycling container. They don't say which don't, so ask an operative if you are unsure. Longley Lane lists mattresses as accepted. Mattresses can't be donated to the Renew shops. See the Manchester tips.
Private collection
A licensed single item collector will usually take a mattress from the room it is in. UK guide prices are about £20 to £50, depending on the size and the stairs.
Handy tips
- Wrap or cover the mattress, and keep it dry
- If you are buying a new mattress, ask the shop whether it will take the old one away
- A mattress is awkward in a hatchback. Check the size before you plan a tip trip
