Start early

Take everything you can with you, and sort what's left a week or two before the end of the tenancy, not on the last day. The bulky collection is booked online or by phone, and the page gives no collection dates, so allow time.

Council collection

The council bulky collection charges per item. A mattress, bed frame, desk, bike, TV, fridge or armchair is £10 each. A bag of general rubbish (no more than 60 litres) is part of the £20 band for up to 8 small items, with microwaves, vacuums and desktop PCs. It is for domestic use only, so keep to your own belongings. The council page also shows a 25% discount on listed prices, which it describes as current, so check the booking form.

The tips

Students with a car can use the tips, but the council says only Newcastle residents can, and you can't walk in. Whether a student counts as a resident isn't explained on the pages we checked, so ask. A van needs a van permit, which asks for proof of a Newcastle address, and has to use Brunswick. See the Newcastle tips guide.

What the landlord handles

Waste left in the property can become a problem for whoever is responsible for it. See landlord and rental waste in Newcastle. Leaving bags on the street can be fly-tipping, and Newcastle uses fixed penalties of £250 to £700. See fly-tipping in Newcastle.

Private collection

If the house is full on the last day, a licensed company can clear everything at once. Compare single item removal for a few things and rubbish removal for a whole room. Split the cost between housemates.
