Council collection
A mattress of any size is £10 on the council bulky collection price list, and a bed frame or headboard is another £10 each. The council page also shows a 25% discount on listed prices, which it describes as current, so check the booking form.
The tips
Brunswick, Byker and Walbottle all list mattresses as accepted. There is no walk-in access, and the council says only Newcastle residents can use the tips. A mattress is awkward in a hatchback, and a van needs a van permit and has to go to Brunswick. See the Newcastle tips guide.
Private collection
A licensed single item collector will usually take a mattress from the room it is in. UK guide prices are about £20 to £50, depending on the size and the stairs.
Handy tips
- Cover the mattress, and keep it dry
- If you are buying a new mattress, ask the shop whether it will take the old one away
- Check the size before you plan a tip trip
