Prices
| Price | Examples from the council list |
|---|---|
| £10 per item | Sofa (dry), armchair, mattress of any size, single or double wardrobe (not fitted), bed frame, fridge or freezer, washing machine, cooker, TV, desk, bike |
| £20 for up to 8 items | Microwave, vacuum cleaner, dining chair, garden refuse in bags, prunings, carpet offcuts in bags, laminate in bundles of 5 strips |
| £40 per item | 3-piece suite, corner sofa in sections, large bookcase, up to 6 kitchen units, a fence panel |
| £70 per item | Bath, toilet, sink, bathroom suite, shed, upright piano, a roll of carpet, kitchen worktop, boiler with up to 5 radiators, 5 bags of builders' rubble, any item not on the list |
Items such as sofas and 3-piece suites need to be kept dry. A fridge or freezer must not be left full of food, and commercial or shop white goods aren't accepted.
The 25% discount
The council page says there is currently a 25% discount on all listed item prices, applied at checkout. The page isn't dated and calls it "currently", so check the booking form for the price you will actually pay.
How it works
- Use the online booking form to see the cost and book
- Or ring 0191 278 7878 and ask for "Your Local Services"
- Bag or box small items so the crew can lift them to shoulder height
- Tape up and secure any glass, including glass in doors or shelves
Rules
The service is strictly for domestic use. The council says any suspected items from businesses or trade may not be collected and you may not be refunded. Some items can only be collected on certain days, and the page doesn't say which. It asks you to follow the household duty of care, and points people who prefer a private "man and van" to the Environment Agency's waste carrier register.
Council or private?
For one or two items the council price is hard to beat, especially with the discount. For a whole house, or building waste beyond a few bags, a private firm is simpler. See house clearance in Newcastle or builders' waste collection. For one item see sofa, mattress or fridge disposal.
