Student move-out rubbish in Leeds

Here's how to clear a Leeds student house without trouble, checked against Leeds City Council pages on 28 October 2026.

Quick answer
  • June brings extra street teams and extra collection vehicles to Leeds student areas
  • The council reminded landlords that tenants must use bins or recycling banks, and says there can be "no excuse" for dumping
  • Students can walk into Kirkstall to drop off bulky items or donate to its re-use shop
  • Landlords can't use the tips or the council bulky collection. A licensed clearance firm can do a whole house in one visit

What the council does in June

Many Leeds student tenancies end in June, around Headingley, Hyde Park and Woodhouse. In June 2026 the council said it was running extra refuse collection and street cleaning vehicles at the worst spots, with two extra caged vehicles sponsored by the Leeds Property Association and Unipol. Street wardens give advice, and enforcement officers patrol and can issue fines. A team also watches for unlicensed waste carriers.

The council didn't publish fixed dates for extra sack collections in what we checked, so don't assume bags left out will be taken. Check your bin day on leeds.gov.uk/mybinday.

Fines

Leaving rubbish on the street is fly-tipping, whoever you are. See fly-tipping and your duty of care in Leeds for what the council has done to people who got it wrong.

For landlords and agents

The council classes waste from a rented property as business waste, so you can't take it to a tip, and the bulky collection is for private residents only. Leeds Rental Standard landlords have had discounted tipping on certain waste at Kirkstall's weighbridge. Otherwise a licensed company can clear the house between tenants and give you a waste transfer note. See house clearance in Leeds.
