Price and limits
The council charges £30 for each collection of up to 5 items, paid by credit or debit card. You can have up to 4 collections a year (April to March). Fence panels and posts count as one item each. Furniture is counted by part, so a bed is 4 items: frame, slats, mattress and headboard. Garden waste counts as 5 items or 4 double-bagged bags.
Free collections
Every household gets one free collection each financial year. People who get council tax support can have up to 4 free collections, and so can some low-income households, such as those on Universal Credit who don't pay council tax. Eligible households book the first one online, then ring 0113 222 4406 for the rest. The service is for private residents only, not landlords or businesses.
How it works
- Book online up to 4 weeks ahead, and keep your reference number
- If no slots are showing, check again each day from Monday to Saturday
- Put the items outside, inside your boundary, before 7am on the day. They must be dry, dismantled and light enough for two people
- The crew comes between 7am and 5pm. Anything inside a garage or outhouse is left, and so is anything with a car parked in front
You can change a booking up to 7 working days before, and cancel up to 48 hours before.
What they won't take
Bathroom suites and kitchen units, building materials and rubble, boilers and radiators, car parts, gas bottles, paint and chemicals, asbestos, glass items like mirrors and fish tanks, pianos, hot tubs, windows and window frames, garage doors and UPVC doors, sheds, tree trunks, general household waste, and loose carpet that is still joined to its underlay. Anything bigger than 6ft by 4ft is out too.
Council or private?
For one free collection, or five items at £30, the council is hard to beat if you can wait and carry things out. If you're clearing a kitchen, a bathroom or a whole property, the exclusions rule it out. For that see builders' waste collection or house clearance in Leeds. For one or two items, see sofa, mattress or fridge disposal, or compare a single item quote.
