The tips

At the top of every Leeds tip page the council says it is temporarily unable to accept fridges and freezers. Its storage areas are full and there is a national shortage of places to process them. It asks people to keep unwanted appliances until the service restarts. The materials lists on the same pages still show fridges, so the notice is the part to follow. Other electrical items are still on the accepted lists at the eight Leeds tips.

When you buy new

Large electrical shops must take back your old appliance for free when you buy a like-for-like new one, and the council says retailer take-back isn't affected by its problem. Ask about it before you order, since collection from your home is often a paid extra, and some stores only accept certain sizes.

Council collection

The council bulky collection lists fridges and freezers as collectable, as long as they are smaller than 6ft by 4ft and have all the food removed. But with the tips full, ask when you book that the item will actually be taken. It's one free collection a year, then £30 for up to 5 items.

Private collection

A specialist collector is the other route the council points to. A licensed company carries the appliance out from the kitchen and takes it to a proper recycling site, often within a day or two, typically £20 to £50 for one. See single item removal.
