Unlike some cities, Leeds doesn't have a closing day at each site. All eight open every day, so you can pick whichever is nearest.
Opening hours
| Season | Hours (every day) |
|---|---|
| Summer, 30 March to 25 October 2026 | 8am to 6pm |
| Winter, 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 | 8am to 4pm |
The last car is let in 15 minutes before closing. All eight shut on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Weekdays are quieter, and weekends and bank holidays mean queues. Some sites also close for a short time during the day to swap containers.
Fridges and freezers
The council says it is temporarily unable to accept fridges and freezers at its tips. Its storage is full, and there is a national shortage of places to process them. The council's materials lists still show them, but the notice at the top of every site page takes priority. Keep the appliance until the service restarts, or use a shop take-back or a specialist collector. See fridge and appliance disposal in Leeds.
Vans and trailers
Short-wheelbase, low-roof vans up to 3 tonnes, 4x4 pick-ups and cars towing a small trailer need a permit. Box vans, long-wheelbase vans, high-roof vans, flatbeds and ordinary pick-ups aren't allowed at all. See the van permit guide.
DIY waste
Rubble, hardcore, soil, plasterboard, ceramics and tyres have limits. Free disposal is limited to 4 visits a month per household, each with either two 50-litre bags or one large item up to 2m by 0.75m. Anything more goes in a skip or to a licensed company. See rubble and building waste in Leeds.
Asbestos
None of the tips takes it without an appointment. Householders can book one at Kirkstall and pay by card by weight. See asbestos disposal in Leeds.
Other rules
- Only Leeds City Council residents can use the tips, and you can't walk in. Arrive by car or bicycle
- No trade waste. The council includes landlords bringing waste from rented properties, and says it can lead to a fine or imprisonment
- Children under 16 and pets stay in the vehicle, and so does anyone not unloading
- Wear proper shoes (no flip-flops, sandals or high heels). Walls and railings are low, so bring a helper for heavy items
Live just outside Leeds? Bradford, Kirklees, Wakefield and North Yorkshire have their own tips and rules.
No car, or the wrong van? A licensed company can collect instead: rubbish removal, single items, builders' waste, garden waste or house clearance.
Tip not an option?
A licensed Leeds company can collect from your home, with no permit and no queue.
