How to book
None of the other seven tips can accept asbestos. At Kirkstall it goes to the council's asbestos store, and you need a slot. Email asbestos@leeds.gov.uk with:
- Your name, full address and postcode
- Where the asbestos came from
- Your vehicle details and a contact number
- The type of material and roughly how much
- Several dates you could do, which improves your chances
The council replies with a time and date by email. Turn up at that time, because you won't be let in otherwise. The council's tip pages mention small amounts, while its price table runs up to 1,000kg, so say how much you have when you book.
What it costs
| Weight | Price (card only) |
|---|---|
| Up to 200kg (minimum) | £72.31 |
| Up to 400kg | £123.96 |
| Up to 600kg | £175.61 |
| Up to 800kg | £227.26 |
| Up to 1,000kg | £278.91 |
Cash and cheques aren't taken. You pay at least the 200kg price, even for a few sheets.
How to wrap it
It must be double wrapped in strong polythene, at least 1000 gauge, and sealed with strong broad tape, with no loose edges or corners. A badly wrapped load will be turned away. Wrap whole sheets and don't break them up.
On the day
- Wear a high-visibility jacket and protective footwear
- Report to the weighbridge first, where your load is checked
- Staff direct you to the container. Put your hazard lights on while you are on site
- Staff won't help unload, so bring a helper
The service is for householders only. Householders from outside Leeds can't use it, and the council can't advise on testing, surveys or removal. Not sure it's asbestos? Get a sample tested before touching it. The Health and Safety Executive has guidance at hse.gov.uk/asbestos.
The rest of the job
Once the sheets are gone, a garage or shed often still has timber, metal and rubbish in it. A licensed company can clear the rest. Most won't carry asbestos, so tell them it has already gone. See builders' waste and rubble and building waste in Leeds.
