Council collection
Leeds counts furniture by part. A mattress is one item, and a full bed is four: the frame, slats, mattress and headboard. With one free collection per household each financial year and then £30 for up to 5 items, getting rid of a whole bed uses most of one collection. See the council bulky collection.
The tips
Mattresses are on the accepted lists for Kirkstall, Meanwood, Middleton, Pudsey, Seacroft, Wetherby and Yeadon, with no limit stated. Otley's list doesn't mention them. A double or king won't fit in most cars, and vans need a permit.
When you buy new
Many bed shops will take the old mattress when they deliver the new one, usually for a fee. Ask when you order. It's often the easiest route, because there's nothing to carry.
Private collection
A licensed company brings it down the stairs and away, often within a day or two, typically £20 to £50 for one mattress. Don't leave it outside for someone else to deal with, as a dumped mattress is fly-tipping. See fly-tipping and your duty of care and single item removal.
