Plan around your area's day

Tameside collects bulky items on one fixed day a week for each area, and you must book by 3pm the working day before. Its own test for what counts is whether you would take the item with you if you moved house, which makes it a good fit for furniture you are leaving behind.

The £38 covers five listed items and is not refundable, so pick a day before completion that will not move. Tameside asks for items to be ready from 7am, outside and all in one easy-to-reach place, and the crew calls between 7am and 3pm.

Reuse and donate

Recycle for Greater Manchester has donate containers at its centres, and upholstered furniture needs its fire label. Anglo Recycling collects clothing, textiles and small electricals free from your doorstep, Tameside says.
