Garden clearance in Trafford
Clearing a garden in Sale, Altrincham, Urmston or Stretford? Here's how the green bin charge and tips work, checked against Trafford Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester pages on 2 November 2026.
- Garden waste in the green bin needs a £50 permit (£45 online)
- Without one, a green bin with garden waste in it will not be emptied
- Permits can take up to 10 working days to arrive
- Soil and branches thicker than your wrist do not go in the bin

The green bin and the permit
Trafford's green bin takes food waste free, but garden waste only goes if the bin shows a valid permit. For 2026-27 it costs £50 per bin, or £45 online, and extra bins bought at the same time are £45 each. The year runs from 1 June to 31 May, and joining part way through still costs the full price (checked against Trafford Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester pages on 2 November 2026).
Subscribers get weekly garden collections. Permits are posted by another company and can take up to 10 working days, so a big tidy-up this weekend will not wait for a new permit.
What the bin will not take
- Soil, which goes to a tip instead
- Twigs and branches thicker than your wrist
- Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam, which cannot go in the bin or to a tip
- Compostable cups, cutlery and straws

Garden waste is accepted at Chester Road in Stretford or Woodhouse Lane in Altrincham, kept separate from food waste, which no Greater Manchester centre takes. Garden soil counts towards the limit of five 900mm by 600mm rubble sacks a visit. A van needs a free van permit.
Paying for a clearance
| Job size | Typical private price |
|---|---|
| A few bags or one or two items | £60 to £100 |
| About half a van | £150 to £250 |
| A full van | £250 to £400 or more |
An overgrown garden, a felled hedge or a season of cuttings often fills half a van.
