The tips
Brunswick, Byker and Walbottle all list carpets as accepted. You need to be a Newcastle resident and arrive in a vehicle, and a van needs a van permit and must use Brunswick. The council gives no limit for carpet. See the Newcastle tips guide.
Council collection
On the council bulky collection price list, one roll of carpet (no longer than 6 foot) is £70 and a roll of vinyl is also £70. Carpet bits and offcuts, bagged in standard bin liners of no more than 60 litres, are part of the £20 band for up to 8 items, and laminate in bundles of 5 strips is on the same list. The council page also shows a 25% discount on listed prices, which it describes as current, so check the booking form.
Private collection
If you're replacing the flooring in a whole house, the council's £70 per roll adds up, and a private firm can take the carpet and underlay together in one visit. For a big job, see rubbish removal or house clearance in Newcastle.
Getting it ready
- Cut and roll the carpet, and tie it
- Keep it dry. Wet carpet is much heavier
- Pull up the gripper rods and staples with gloves on
- If it's a tenancy, check who is responsible. See landlord and rental waste in Newcastle
