Carpet disposal in Manchester
Here's how to get rid of old carpet in Manchester, checked against Manchester City Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester pages on 29 October 2026.
- Carpets are accepted at the recycling centres, and both Manchester tips list them
- The pages we checked don't mention carpet for the bulky collection, and it won't take waste left by building or repair work
- The tips are free if you live in Greater Manchester, but there is no walk-in access
- A whole house of flooring is usually easier with a private collection

The tips
Recycle for Greater Manchester says you can take carpets to a recycling centre, and both Longley Lane and Sandfold Lane list them. Use is free for Greater Manchester residents. There is no pedestrian access, so a carpet needs a vehicle. Residents without one can only hand a small amount to the staff at the entrance, which won't work for a roll of carpet. A car gets 52 visits a year. Vans need a free van permit. Cut and roll the carpet so it fits in the boot with the seats down.
Council collection
On the council bulky collection you list the items you want taken and put them on the pavement at the front of your home. You get one free collection of three items a year, then £30.50 for three. The council's rules say the crew can only lift what two people can handle safely, so a long, wet carpet won't work. The pages we checked don't mention carpet, so list it carefully when you book and keep each roll small.
A refit or a landlord job
The council's bulky collection won't take waste left by building or repair work, and it also excludes laminated floorboards. If a fitter lifts your old carpet as part of the job, ask them to remove it. If you are a landlord clearing a rental, business waste can't go to the tips at all. See landlord and rental waste in Manchester.
Private collection
A licensed firm will take carpet, underlay and gripper together, and you don't need to cut anything. It is worth comparing for a whole house of flooring. See house clearance in Manchester or rubbish removal.
Getting it ready
- Keep it dry. Wet carpet is much heavier
- Roll it tightly and tape it, one room at a time
- Pull up the gripper rods and staples with gloves on
- Ask your fitter in writing whether disposal is included
