What it takes

The council's list includes sofas, armchairs, mattresses, bed frames, wardrobes, tables, chairs, fridges and freezers (emptied), washing machines, dryers, cookers (not range cookers), dishwashers, TVs, carpets and underlay in lengths of up to 2 metres, bikes and bagged household waste.

What the council will not take

Stockport's garden and building waste page lists these as items it will not collect. They are not on the household list either.

The household list also excludes range cookers and petrol lawnmowers.

Booking rules

Council or private?

For one sofa or mattress, the council's £30 is hard to beat if you can wait and don't qualify for anything cheaper. For a mixed load, building waste or anything on the refused list, a licensed company can take it all in one visit. Compare house clearance, strip-out waste and single item removal.

Something the council will not take?

A licensed Stockport company can collect it, usually in one visit.
