Shed removal in Rochdale

Old shed to get rid of in Rochdale? Here's what the council and tips allow, checked against Rochdale Borough Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester pages on 2 November 2026.

Will the council take it?

The council lists furniture, white goods and electricals, TVs and computers, garden furniture and equipment, children's items, mobility aids and household fixtures such as sinks, toilets and radiators. It says the full list appears when you apply. A shed, or a pile of shed panels, is not on that list. Even if something is accepted, items must be outside by 7am on your usual bin day, and the crew cannot collect from inside your house or garage. A booking stops at six items.

Taking it down yourself

1. Empty the shed and clear the area around it
2. Take the felt and roof boards off first, then the side panels
3. Pull or flatten any nails so the timber is safe to carry
4. Load the wood, metal and glass separately so it is quick to sort at the tip
5. Take it to the Rochdale tips (vans need a free van permit)

Recycle for Greater Manchester lists wood and timber as DIY waste you can bring from your own home. A concrete or slab base is rubble, and the limit is five 900mm by 600mm sacks a visit. Window glass cannot go in your mixed recycling bin.

Check the roof first

Some older sheds and garages have cement sheet roofs that may contain asbestos. Do not break or cut them. Neither Rochdale tip takes asbestos: see asbestos disposal in Rochdale for where it goes.

Paying someone

A company can take the shed down and remove it in one visit, base included if you ask. Get the price for dismantling and removal together, and check they hold a waste carrier registration.
