The tips
Byker and Walbottle take small amounts of building waste, rubble, soil and plasterboard, and domestic DIY waste. The council gives no sack count or weight, so a big load risks being turned away. Brunswick takes no rubble, soil or DIY waste. Its plasterboard status is unclear: the table says yes, the text says only Byker and Walbottle.
The van problem
Vans, pick-ups and trailers can only use Brunswick, which takes no rubble or soil. That leaves a car without a trailer as the practical way to take rubble to a Newcastle tip, in small amounts. See the van permit guide.
The bulky collection
The council bulky collection price list includes 5 bags of builders' rubble in blue rubble sacks for £70, before the discount shown on its page, plus timber, a kitchen worktop and a boiler as separate paid items.
Trade waste
The council says disposing of commercial or trade waste at its tips is an offence, with a fixed penalty of £400 to £700 or prosecution. If you are suspected of having trade waste you will be asked to leave. Waste a builder produces on your job is normally theirs to remove as trade waste, so check their quote covers it.
Your options
| Option | Best for | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| Builders' waste collection | Bags or piles of rubble, loaded for you | Often £150 to £250 for a medium load, £250 to £400 for a large one |
| Skip | Longer jobs you fill as you go | Depends on size; a permit is needed if it goes on the road |
| Grab lorry | Tonnes of soil or rubble | Around £150 for a small load up to £450 to £500 for 16 tonnes |
Asbestos
Old garage roofs and shed sheets might contain asbestos. The council does not accept asbestos or items containing it at any of its sites. Get expert advice before you touch it.
