Who needs one
The council says you need a permit to use a van or large trailer at a household recycling centre. It counts vans under 3.5 tonnes, pick-ups and trailers over 6ft by 4ft or with more than one axle as commercial vehicles. Motor homes do not need one, because the council does not treat them as commercial, provided they are unstripped and under 3.5 tonnes. A car does not need a permit.
How to apply
- Apply online. All permits are issued electronically
- If there are no exceptions, a virtual permit arrives straight away
- Then book a slot at one of the three centres. You can book on the day if a slot is free, but the council recommends booking ahead
- To change the slot, do so up to 30 minutes before it starts
Rules
- The permit is for household waste from a Hull address. Trade waste and commercial addresses are refused
- If you miss a slot and have not cancelled, the permit is not replaced
- A hire van needs the hire agreement showing a Hull address, plus a resident's pass or proof of address. See hire vans at Hull tips
Why it can be refused
The council lists reasons including: the vehicle already holds permits at another Hull or East Riding address, another vehicle is already registered to your address, you own two or more vans, it is less than 12 months since your previous permits were issued, you are a landlord, the address is commercial, you plan to dispose of trade waste, or your vehicle is too large for the site. East Riding residents who need a permit should call 01482 393 939.
