The free collection
Each household gets one free bulky collection of up to five single items in a 12-month period. If you need to dispose of more, an extra collection is needed, with a minimum charge of £5 according to the council page. You cannot book a collection for a resident who has left the property, and the service is only for customers within the Hull City boundary.
What it takes
The free list includes washing machines, cookers, dishwashers, fridges and freezers (empty of all food), tumble dryers, TVs, computers, vacuum cleaners and microwaves. It also includes sofas, mattresses, bed frames (divan beds emptied), headboards, wardrobes (whole if possible), dining tables and chairs, bookcases and cabinets, plus bikes, toys, lawn mowers, carpets (rolled up and secured) and underlay. American style fridges need the doors removed. A charity, Dove House, collects working appliances free.
What it does not take
- Anything that can go in the blue or brown bin, and bags or boxes of general waste
- Rubble, trees, tyres, broken glass and asbestos
- Paint tins, empty or full, gas bottles, fluorescent tubes and car batteries
- Fire-damaged items
- Wood with nails and screws in, including shed and fence wood
- Fridges or freezers with food left inside
The council says to take these to its recycling centres. See Hull tips.
DIY charges
DIY items are chargeable on every collection. Examples are single radiators at £25.17 each, a bathroom suite at £60.29, and internal doors from £25.10 for the first one. See kitchen and bathroom strip-out waste in Hull for more prices. The council also notes that if a collection total goes over £70, hiring a skip from a private firm may be cheaper.
