The garden waste bin
The council's terms give the charge as £46 per bin, per year, paid in advance by debit or credit card. You get a maximum of 20 collections per household, once every two weeks. The later you sign up, the fewer collections you get. The terms say customers needed to pay by 12 February 2026, so the date for the next season isn't confirmed. A lost, stolen or damaged bin costs £30 to replace. You have 14 working days from payment to cancel if you haven't had a collection, and there are no refunds for missed collections, moving or bad weather. The service is for domestic properties only.
What goes in
Loose grass cuttings, weeds, dead flowers, small tree branches, leaves, and shrub and hedge trimmings. Nothing in bags. The council won't take food waste, turf or soil, stones, gravel, bricks, cat litter, dog mess, plant pots or compost bags. Branches, logs or roots over 10cm (4 inches) across and Japanese knotweed are out. The lid must close fully, and no side waste is collected.
The tips
Brunswick, Byker and Walbottle all take green garden waste. You need to be a Newcastle resident with a vehicle. See the Newcastle tips guide.
If a gardener did the work
The council says its garden waste service is not for waste from commercial gardeners, groundskeepers or associated trades, and trade waste is an offence at the tips. Check that a gardener's quote includes taking the waste away.
A big clearance
The council bulky collection price list has a garden refuse item in the £20 band (bags of no more than 60 litres, with no soil, stones or turf) and prunings tied and bundled no longer than 6 foot. A shed no larger than 6 by 4 foot, dismantled, is £70. For an overgrown garden or a big tree job, a licensed firm or a skip is simpler. See garden waste collection or rubbish removal.
