What the council says

Tameside's bulky collection lists internal and external doors, garage doors and window frames among the items it will not collect (checked against Tameside Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester pages on 2 November 2026). So a new front door, a set of internal doors or replacement windows leaves you with the old ones to deal with.

If a fitter is replacing them

Tameside says it is illegal to take business waste to a household recycling centre, and waste from a tradesperson you paid counts as business waste. Ask before you agree a price whether the fitter will take the old doors or windows away, and check their waste carrier registration.

If you took them out yourself

  1. Take off handles, hinges and letterboxes and put them in the metal bay
  2. Wooden doors go with wood and timber at Ash Road in Droylsden or Bayley Street in Stalybridge
  3. Ask staff where uPVC frames and glazed panels should go before unloading
  4. Wrap any loose glass so it is safe to carry

Recycle for Greater Manchester says window glass cannot go in your mixed recycling bin. Vans need a free van permit.
