Plan it early
Coventry has a big student population, from Coventry University and the University of Warwick, and lots of shared houses empty at the same time at the end of the academic year. So it's worth sorting out what's going a couple of weeks before you move, rather than leaving it to the last day.
Your options
| Option | Good for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Council bulky collection | Up to 10 big items or bags | £21.25 for 5 items, £4 each after. Book at least 2 days ahead. Three bin bags count as one item. Items go out at the front, ground floor |
| Emmaus Coventry & Warwickshire | Good furniture someone can reuse | Free collection of large items in good condition. Book online or on 024 7666 1466 |
| The tip | If you have a car | Booking only, and you need proof of a Coventry address. Waste must be from your address |
| Private collection | Lots of rubbish, no car, or no time | A licensed company loads everything, often within a day or two |
Fines to avoid
- Don't leave rubbish on the pavement or in the front garden for someone else to deal with. Coventry raised its fly-tipping fine to £1,000 in November 2024
- Don't pay a cheap "man with a van" without checking his waste carrier licence. If he dumps it, you can be fined up to £600 for breaking your duty of care
- Rubbish left behind can come off your deposit
For landlords
The council bulky collection isn't available to private landlords. For a quick turnaround between tenancies, a licensed company can clear the whole house in one visit. See house clearance in Coventry.
