What's free
Stoke-on-Trent residents can bring up to two 50-litre rubble bags, or one bulky or fitted item up to 2m x 75cm x 70cm (a bath, say), free, no more than four times in any four weeks. You'll sign a form saying it's not from paid work. Waste from any income-generating work doesn't count as DIY waste.
The charges
Over the free amount, it's charged by the bag, sheet or load, by debit card only. Full-load prices:
| What you bring | Soil, hardcore or bulky building materials | Plasterboard |
|---|---|---|
| Per bag or large item / per 6ft x 3ft sheet | £3.15 | £4.15 |
| Car or hatchback, full load | £18.75 | £25.05 |
| Small van, estate, 4x4 or small pick-up, full load | £37.60 | £50.10 |
| Trailer 6ft to 10ft, full load | £62.60 | £83.45 |
| Transit van or flatbed, full load | £125.25 | £166.95 |
There are also quarter, half and three-quarter load prices, starting at £6.30 for a quarter of a car boot of rubble.
What counts
- Soil and hardcore: rubble, concrete, bricks, tiles, pottery, toilets and sinks, soil and turf
- Bulky building materials: plastic or fibreglass items and plate glass
- Plasterboard: sheets and coving
Tip or collection?
A full van of rubble costs up to £125.25 at the tip, and that's before hiring the van, loading it and driving there twice if needed. From 2 November vans also need a permit and a booking. A licensed builders' waste collection usually costs more than the tip charge alone, but saves you the van hire, fuel and loading. For tonnes of soil, a grab lorry is usually cheapest.
