Council collection
Bristol City Council counts sofas, armchairs and futons as soft furnishings. They are priced £26.50 for one, £41.50 for two and £52 for three, and you make a separate booking for them. Two people must be able to carry each item, and nothing over 2 metres long is taken. Soft furnishings soaked with water are not collected, so keep the sofa dry until the crew arrives. Earlier versions of the council pages showed slightly lower prices, so check the booking form for the price you will pay.
The tips
The council lists household furniture as accepted at its recycling centres. It does not name sofas on that list, so ring if you are unsure. You need a slot from the tip booking guide, photo ID and proof of a Bristol address. A sofa is awkward in a hatchback, and a van or pick-up needs a van permit.
Private collection
A licensed company takes the sofa from inside your home and handles the paperwork. Prices are UK guide figures and depend on size, stairs and the number of pieces.
