At the tips

The Kirkless visitor guide shows separate containers for rubble and soil and for plasterboard, plus wood, scrap metal and tyres. The pages we checked state no charges and no limits on amounts, and the permit page says only that the amount should be reasonable for the size of your vehicle. Vans and pick-ups need a free tip permit. Asbestos is a separate case: see asbestos disposal in Wigan.

Builders and landlords

The council does not allow waste from traders, landlords or property developers at its recycling centres, and says doing so may be a criminal offence. A builder doing a job for you normally has to take the waste away. Ask where it is going: see fly-tipping and your duty of care.

Collection options

The council bulky collection will not take bricks, rubble, soil, wood, doors or kitchen units. For anything bigger use a licensed company: builders' waste, grab hire or rubbish removal.
