Before anything goes

1. Check with the executor or solicitor that the house can be cleared
2. Search for the will, deeds, bank and pension letters, and any cash or jewellery
3. Set aside photos and keepsakes for the family
4. Take meter readings and let the council know about the empty property for council tax

The council service

The Trafford bulky collection costs £44.10 for up to five items. Trafford's terms say items must be outside the building but inside your property boundary by 6.30am, put out only that morning, and each one must be safe for two people to carry. That suits a few large pieces once the family has been through the house, but not the whole contents. Trafford lists Moya Cole Hospice Ardwick Furniture Shop, Wesley Community Furniture, the British Heart Foundation, the Salvation Army and the Tree of Life Centre for good furniture.

Using a clearer

A good clearer will go room by room, keep anything you have marked, pass on what can be reused and take the rest away legally. Check their waste carrier registration and get the price written down. The executor will want the receipt for the estate accounts.
