What Trafford expects from businesses
Trafford Council's business waste page says firms must organise and pay for their own commercial waste removal and recycling, use a contractor with a valid waste carrier licence, and make sure their waste is not fly-tipped. It says you should keep documentary evidence of how your rubbish was disposed of for two years, and that not doing so can lead to a fixed penalty notice (checked against Trafford Council and Recycle for Greater Manchester pages on 2 November 2026).
Business waste must not go in household bins, street litter bins or alleyways. A business can take its own rubbish to a licensed disposal site, but not to the household recycling centres for free. Trafford says 337 businesses were asked to show how they dispose of their waste, and 40 received at least one fixed penalty.
Clearing an office, shop or unit
- List what is going: desks, chairs, filing cabinets, IT, kitchen items, general waste
- Pull out anything with data on it, such as old computers, hard drives and paper files, and arrange secure destruction
- Ask whether furniture in good condition can be reused or sold
- Book a licensed carrier and get the paperwork for every load
Businesses on Trafford Park, in Stretford, Sale, Altrincham or Old Trafford all fall under the same rules.
