By law, householders must make sure their waste goes to someone authorised to take it. If a "man with a van" dumps it and it is traced back to you, you can be fined as well. Trafford has also asked 337 businesses to show their waste paperwork, and 40 were fined.
Checking who you hire
- Ask for their waste carrier registration number
- Check it on the Environment Agency public register
- Ask where the waste is going
- Get a receipt with their name and the date
- Be wary of very cheap cash-only offers on social media
