Who the tips are for

Bristol's recycling centres are for household waste from a Bristol home. The council says it is illegal to bring business, trade or construction waste, so waste a fitter or builder produces on your job is theirs to take away. Check their quote covers it. See rubble and building waste in Bristol for the DIY rules.

What the tips charge

WasteCharge
Sanitary ware (sink, toilet, pedestal)£2.50 per bag
Rubble, tiles and soil beyond the allowance£3 per bag or item
Clean plasterboard£5 per sheet or bag
Plasterboard with other materials attached£9

What is free

The Bristol Waste Company lists wood, metal, plastic windows and doors, plastic pipes and guttering, insulation and roofing felt as free to dispose of. The free allowance also covers one bulky or fitted item such as a sink or pedestal, up to 2m by 0.75m by 0.7m, within one load a week.

Council collection

The council bulky collection takes items that two people can carry and nothing over 2 metres long, but its list of what it does not collect includes building and DIY waste, so do not expect it to take rubble, plasterboard or tiles. It does not say whether it takes kitchen units, worktops or baths, so ring before you book. It also refuses paint and other liquids.

A private firm

For a whole kitchen or bathroom, a licensed builders' waste company brings its own vehicle and loads it. UK guide prices run £150 to £250 for a medium load.
